Spirits of DeMaine's Lexicon

With so much going on I decided to add a lexicon or a "People, Places and Things" list for the reader.  It is suggested not to read this till the reader is on this book because of the possibilities of spoilers.  It is listed in simple alphabetical order.

13 Mockingbird Lane- Residence of Kevin Delaney.
 

Aiden Rexpen- Ted’s father, successful businessman, started Rexpen Enterprises, Alumni of S.U.
 

Alfred Keel- employee who died in the fire of 1863.
 

Alungat- Romanian for cast out.  The process of casting out members from the community.  No one can have contact or dealings with them. 
 

Amangamek River- large river that separates Old Strathmore from New Strathmore. 

​

Andreea Parasca- Auntie.  Evelynn’s aunt who raised her after her parents died.  Lives in a two-bedroom apartment on Speers Street in Old Strathmore.  A lot of immigrant families live here. 

​

Anthony Keel- employee who died in the fire of 1863.

​

Antioch Gate- Entrance to Antioch a Templar Stronghold in Turkey.  The Big Black Door was once located there.

​

Apportation is similar to teleportation but of a paranormal state.

​

Arthur Norris- employee at DeMaine’s in 1933 who also steals from corpse, he is killed by Buche and drops the amulet into a crack in the floorboards. 

​

Artman Street- Street in Strathmore where DeMaine’s is located.  Cross Street is Buchanan Street.

​

Benjamin Crimshaw- deceased.  A ghoul that lived under Crimshaw Manor.

​

Big Black Door- Templar Door to the residence on the third floor, rumored to have arcane properties.

​

Black Thistle Tavern- Local tavern that is haunted. Short story that can be found on web page.

​

“Blink” - to move unnaturally fast, it is meant as a defensive mechanism. 

​

Caitlynn Jorgensen an 8-year-old who died October 14, 1952 out in front of DeMaine’s on Artman Street. 

​

Camille Drogoth- gypsy woman who was having an affair, the Blue Lady, died by falling downstairs February 18, 1933. 

​

Charles Washington- Supervisor at DeMaine’s when it was a furniture manufacturer. Died in the fire of 1863.

​

Cozonac- Romanian sweet bread.

​

Crimshaw Manor- haunted historic manor house.  Scene of first story.

​

Damon Jackson- shot and killed while attending his brother’s funeral in 1977 in parlor B.

David and Carla Dean- children of John and Becky. 

​

David Tripp- died at DeMaine’s once it was closed due to overdose in the hallway first floor. 

​

Delta Kappa Pi Sorority- a sorority on campus that Robb has had a bad experience with.  Members are “mean rich girls” who mess with occult practices.

​

DeMaine’s- historic building.  It was a funeral home and is now a nightclub.  Stephen and Evelynn live there.

​

Dr. Mark Markus- Dean of Paranormal Studies at S.U.

​

Dr. Richard Brentworth- Professor, Paranormal Studies at S.U.

​

Dr. Vanessa Oberham- Professor, Paranormal Studies at S.U.

​

Eastwood- an upper-class neighborhood in Old Strathmore.

​

Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP)- Believed to be voices of spirits not heard by the human ear but detectable on digital recordings. 

​

Elizabeth Crimshaw- deceased.  Spirit that haunts Crimshaw Manor.

​

Eric Drexel- Student from Charlottesville, VA.  English major.

​

Evelynn Dumavastra- Student at S.U. majoring in Paranormal Studies. Ballet dancer, server at Neeko’s Pizza, and owner of Poltergeist the dog.  Has psychic dreams and the ability to enter the Spiritus Viatorem meditative state.

​

Evelynn’s grandfather- Grandfather- had immigrated from Romania and worked for the railroad in Strathmore. 

​

Fickle Mistress- an alternative band that is a regular at DeMaine’s Nightclub.

Frank- Operations Manager at DeMaine’s.

​

Full spectrum camera- Camera designed to capture visible light, infrared light, and even ultraviolet light.  Can photograph images not visible to the human eye and usually produced a purple tinge to the photos.

​

Geist- Also known as Poltergeist.  Evelynn’s dog.

​

George Forester- employee who died in the fire of 1863.

​

Grishum Grist Mill- Haunted location in Strathmore. Short story on Web page.

​

Hamilton Library- Main library at Strathmore University.

​

Jessica- Server at DeMaine’s.

​

John Dean- Husband of Rebecca “Becky” Dean.  Died due to an accident, viewing was at DeMaine’s when Becky Dean killed herself.

​

John Lee- Student from Arlington, VA. Computer Science Major.

​

K-2 Meter- measures electromagnetic fields and displays the strength of those fields by colored lights; Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and the highest, Red.

​

Karl- A hired thug.  Ex-military, dabbled in the occult.

​

Kelly Fair- Student from Wytheville, VA.  Undecided.

​

Kenneth Morris- employee who died in the fire of 1863. 

​

Kenny Buche- an employee at DeMaine’s in 1933 who steals from corpse, kills Arthur Norris over the amulet that he takes from Camille’s body. 

​

Kevin Delaney- Last Director of DeMaine’s Funeral Home.

​

La Dama Azul- Spanish for The Blue Lady.

​

Littleton Walker Tazewell- Governor of Virginia 1834-1836.

​

Locard’s Exchange Principle- Forensics theory that every time a person makes contact with another person, place, or thing, it results in an exchange of physical materials. 

​

Lord Edmund Strathmore- English aristocrat, fought in the French and Indian War and in 1763 was granted the land that Strathmore sits upon and is named after. 

​

Lucian Drogoth- head of a family back in the 70’s believed to have murdered a small boy. 

​

Manny- a bar tender at DeMaine’s.

​

Molly Hutchinson House- Private residence in Strathmore that is haunted.  A spite house. Short story that can be found on web page.

​

Mr. Skeleton- Geist’s favorite squeaky toy.

​

Nathan Piller- died via suicide at DeMaine’s in parlor A. 

​

Neeko’s Pizza- Locally owned pizza restaurant near campus.

​

“Occultism in Early Virginia”- book written by Ted’s father, Aiden Rexpen in the1970s. 

Old Strathmore- the original east side of Strathmore.

​

Oscar- Busboy at DeMaine’s.

​

Ovilus- a piece of equipment that is small, square, with two stubby antennas and a display face.  It contains a long list of words or short phrases within it.  Investigators believe that changes in the environment that are manipulated by spirits can select words.  It comes as a digital app as well.

​

Paranormal Exchange Principle- Stephen’s theory that whenever a person makes contact with a spirit or entity an exchange of energy occurs.

​

Politie- Romanian for police. 

​

Printesa- Romanian for Princess. 

​

Private Henry T. Piller- Died April 28, 1967, in Vietnam. 

​

Rachel Montgomery- wife of Richard who pushes Camille down the stairs, killing her.

​

Rebecca “Becky” Dean- died via suicide August 18, 1970, in parlor A. 

​

REM Pod- Radiating Electro-Magnetism Pod.  A coffee-can-size device with lights on top with an antenna.  Radiates its own electromagnetic field, when a person or spirit comes near it the device will light up and sound an alarm. 

​

Rick’s- Thai family restaurant.

​

Richard Montgomery- Successful married businessman that Camille was having an affair with.  It is his funeral that she attends and then is pushed down the stairs. 

​

Robb’s Reminder- wound in Stephen’s thigh from Robb’s ninja star.

​

Robb Winchester- Student from Arlington, VA. Drama Major. Practitioner of Ninjutsu.

​

Robert Stimpson- employee of DeMaine’s who died in the fire of 1863.

​

Savanah- Robb’s girlfriend, student at S.U. Member of Delta Kappa Pi sorority.

​

Shades- like a ghost but are pure evil spirits that were once human and now serve an evil cause.  The shades of Kenny and Arthur were placed to protect the amulet until Camille could find someone to retrieve it for her.

​

SLS camera- projects a IR light and measures the response on sensors that then displays that data as stick figures on a screen. 

​

Speers Street- Street in Old Strathmore where Auntie lives. 

​

Spiritus Viatorem- Latin for Spirit Traveler.  A process of entering a meditative state by walking a path in an area repeatedly where residual hauntings exist.  The thought being that once in the meditative state the person projects their astral self to that point in time to witness firsthand the event captured in time.  While in the state the person is an observer and cannot alter anything.  A dangerous procedure that can result in the person not being able to return to their body or going insane.

​

Sta- Romanian for sit. 

​

Strathmore Estates- upper class neighborhood in New Strathmore.

​

Strathmore- Town where the story is set.  It is a college town located west of Route 81 between Winchester, VA and Harrisburg, VA.

​

Strathmore Gazette- Local newspaper that has been around since its founding. 

​

Strathmore Historical Society- An organization dating back to the early 1900’s that is dedicated to preserving the history of Strathmore through education, collections, and preserving historically significant structures and sites.

​

Strathmore University- University where characters go and teach.  Also known as S.U.

​

Stephen Davenport- Adjunct Professor of Paranormal Studies at Strathmore

University.  Manager at DeMaine’s Nightclub.  Academic Advisor to the Strathmore Paranormal Investigations club. Can see spirits at times.

​

Tea with Camille- A psychic dream that Evelynn has where she and Camille are having tea.  Camille tells Evelynn that she will help her be free or threatens her by sending her “tentacles” into her.  Dream location takes place at Camille’s old Victorian house.

​

Ted Rexpen- Stephen’s friend, owner of DeMaine’s, benefactor.

​

The Blue Lady- Spirit haunting DeMaine’s.

​

The Order and the Master- Secret society in Strathmore.

​

The Sentinel- bridge that connects eastside to the west side of Strathmore.  Crosses the Amangamek River.

​

Tyron Williams- shot and killed Damon Jackson and then was shot and killed by mob.  Body dumped in the Amangamek River. 

​

Veil/Gray- the area between life and death.
